Holiday Cheer-- Caroling Party!

Looking for a fun way to get friends and family together this holiday season? Try hosting a caroling party! I have come up with four easy steps, and a list of favorite carols for people of all ages, to help you get into the Christmas spirit and make the most of your caroling party.

Step 1: Send Christmas themed invitations to friends, family, and children. Arrange for everyone to meet at your house for warm beverages and introductions (in case your guests aren't well acquainted).

Step 2: Pick the carols you wish you sing (see my suggestions at the bottom) and get the sheet music from OnlineSheetMusic.com. Make sure you print a copy of each song for each guest. People will be more likely to sing if they have the lyrics!

Step 3: Head out into your neighborhood, and sing to the lit houses.

Step 4: End back at your house, for wine and heavy appetizers. Your guests will have worked up an appetite!

Remembering a Virtuoso: Roger Williams

With a successful career lasting more than a half-century, and as one of Billboard magazine's number one hit makers beginning in the 1950's, the great virtuoso pianist and composer named Roger Williams passed away earlier this month at 87 years of age. Born Louis Wertz in Nebraska, he could already play the piano by age three. But this was, indeed, just one of the many accomplishments for the man they called "Mister Piano."
Williams was innovative and seemed to enjoy expanding his horizons, both musically and technologically. By the ripe old age of nine, he was already able to play nearly anything "by ear" and on a variety of instruments, but another facet to his incredible list of credits is hosting his own fifteen-minute radio show in his early teen years – perhaps the forefather to today's podcasts. After attending Juilliard School of Music, Williams took his talents to the masses by entering competitions – and easily winning – before signing to Kapp Records by the one-and-only Dave Kapp, himself.
Roger Williams first hit record came from a drastically edited version of his classic, "Autumn Leaves," that had to be shortened to accommodate the so-called 3-minute limit of 1950's radio. Clearly, that was all it took for him to find that massive audience that rocketed him to stardom. After that point, the hits kept coming and his frequent appearances on television (remember, there were only a precious few networks at that time) variety shows made him a household name. That particular song became the largest selling piano recording of all time.
Williams' thirty-eight hit records and twenty-two hit singles fill a discography that is filled with his vivid musical imagery and emotion that may have contributed to how so much of his music was included in movie soundtracks throughout his career. He was also the first pianist to receive a star on the famed Hollywood Walk of Fame and he performed for every President of The United States from Harry Truman to Bill Clinton.
The entire music industry will remember the effortless, fluid, and embracing genius of Roger Williams for generations to come. His passing on October 8, 2011 brings his family, friends, and his fans to a fermata, if you will. OnlineSheetMusic celebrates the life and music of the great Roger Williams. Rest in peace.

New Season for Singing Shows

American Idol, The Sing Off, X-Factor, and Glee, and many more like Nashville Star and America's Got Talent, are starting their new seasons this month. Its hard to know what to watch this upcoming season but I think The X Factor will be interesting with Simon Cowell. The countdown on their website says 20 days, 1 hour and 17 in minutes left until the launch of the program, at the moment I am writing this. This is the long awaited show that Simon Cowell left American Idol to produce and several lawsuits later, Simon Fuller ( Producer of American Idol) is getting a piece of the X Factor pie.

The X-Factor refers to that undefinable something that can't be named. Its not the voice, or the person's looks, but that something special that gives them star quality. The judges look like American Idol judges, there is even a Randy Jackson look alike. It is also similar to American Idol, in the sense that it is a singing competition, but it differs because the audience is involved in the tryouts and there are different categories of singers, young, old, and groups, so there is more variety of contestants. This show has been extremely successful in the UK and will probably be more so in the US. It premieres on September 21, 2011 and the countdown continues....20 days, 0 hours and 48 minutes...

Glee in the Theaters

Glee Live! 3D! is opening in theaters on August 12.

The three dimensional movie that Glee' co-creator Ryan Murphy said in a statement will allow Gleeks who couldn't get tickets to the concert tour a chance to experience the madness firsthand. "There were only so many cities we could get to," Murphy said in a statement. "We knew that not every fan who wanted to attend a concert would get that opportunity. Now, thanks to our friends at Twentieth Century Fox Film, we'll be able to bring the concert experience to movie theaters across the country in full three dimensional glory. We promise every passionate Gleek a cinematic experience that will have them singing and dancing in the aisles."

Gwynyth Paltrow is doing a cameo in the movie singing Cee Lo Green"s "Forget You" like she did on an episode during the second Glee season.

According to the press release, "The movie will capture the unique concert experience along with special moments involving the characters themselves." (We take that to mean behind-the-scenes footage and/or in-character skits.) The cast will be singing songs from Season 2 including "I'm a Slave 4 U" and "Teenage Dream".

Remembering Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse made beautiful music and while she will be remembered as much for her problematic behavior on stage from drinking and drugs, her music is so much bigger than the soap opera life she led for the last few years.

Amy's powerful voice and singing style brought us something new and reminded us of the 60s girl bands. She wore her heart on her sleeve with her many songs of heartbreak and addiction.

She will be remembered most especially for her hit song "Rehab".
She was a huge talent....she will be missed.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II

WOW!! "Harry Potter makes box-office magic for the last time" as reported by Grady Smith in EW News. The last book made into a movie has again, broken box office records. It holds the record for highest single day gross, highest domestic opening weekend ( $169M) and highest global opening weekend ($478M). All total, the movie has earned $545M in just four days.

The soundtrack for Deathly Hallows was released on June 16, 2011. The music was composed by Alexandre Desplat and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Mr Desplat wrote the music in early 2011 and they performed it with the LSO in May. Desplat is the fourth composer to write music for a Harry Potter movie. The iconic Hedwig's Theme by John Williams is used in all of the films and will probably be one of the most popular pieces of music from a movie soundtrack in this century. This music has been used for ring tones, arranged for every instrument and ensemble, and has a melody that can be remembered and hummed. We have many arrangements of Hedwig's Theme sheet music...

And sheet music from Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Part 1!

Beyonce's Summer Music Tour

Its tour season and Beyonce is jet setting all over the globe to support her new album "4". There were rumors that the album wasn't going to be successful, when the first single was leaked early in June and only made it to #29 on the Billboard Hot 100. Beyonce has the last laugh though because her album is #1 on the Billboard 200. There is an 18 month global promotional plan which includes, putting out a lot of singles, making videos, and extensive touring, according to Columbia exec, Rob Stringer.

Apparently the fans named the new album, saying they were waiting for number 4, so Beyonce decided to name the album "4" for her fourth album. She explained that four was an important number to her, her birthday is on the fourth and so is her husbands, she got married o
n the fourth, so she likes the number! She described the album as a departure from her usual radio friendly a bit of rock, jazz, a lot of live instrementation", she said she wanted to bring chords and bridges and melody back on the radio. That was her goal. Looks like the album is a resounding success....find Beyonce sheet music here.

Glee Cast Graduates

Glee creator, Ryan Murphy is going to be true to his vision and let the current cast of Glee "graduate"! He plans to let the kids graduate and move on after season three. He said, "I don't think of it as eliminating or replacing, because I think the thing about this cast is people love them and they are incredibly talented. They've left sort of an indelible mark. The thing that I wanted to do and the cast wanted to do, we didn't want to have a show where they were in high school for eight years. We really wanted it to be true to that experience. We thought it would be really cool if we were true to the timeline."

"We've got Matt Morrison and Jane Lynch who will stay and be the male and female lynchpins of the series. But I think the fun thing about the show is it's a celebration of youth and talent and I think that just like with the original cast, I think finding those young unknown people and giving them an opportunity to break into the business and become stars is a really fun and exciting thing and is the spirit of the series."

Ryan Murphy is looking for new talent on "The Glee Project" which is on the Oxygen network. What an opportunity for these new kids!

Clarence Clemons

World renowned saxophonist, Clarence Clemons died on Saturday at age 69. He died of a stroke. Clarence had been a member of the Bruce Springsteen E Street Band since the 1970's.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that "Mr. Clemons' first encounter with Springsteen has become E Street Band lore. In most tellings, a lightning storm was rolling through Asbury Park one night in 1971 while Springsteen was playing a gig there.
As Mr. Clemons entered the bar, the wind blew the door off its hinges, and Springsteen was startled by the towering shadow at the door. Then Mr. Clemons invited himself onstage to play along, and they clicked."I felt like I was supposed to be there. It was a magical moment," Mr. Clemons later recalled. "He looked at me, and I looked at him, and we fell in love. And that's still there."

Bruce Springsteen made a statement shortly after word of Clemons' death got out. He said, "Clarence lived a wonderful life. He carried within him a love of people that made them love him. He created a wondrous and extended family. He loved the saxophone, loved our fans and gave everything he had every night he stepped on stage.

His loss is immeasurable and we are honored and thankful to have known him and had the opportunity to stand beside him for nearly forty years. He was my great friend, my partner and with Clarence at my side, my band and I were able to tell a story far deeper than those simply contained in our music.

His life, his memory, and his love will live on in that story and in our band."

Its hard to imagine the E Street Band without Clemons' powerful sax. Clemons also branched far beyond the E Street Band, and gigged with a long list of famous musicians. Most recently, Clemons appeared in the Lady Gaga video for 'The Edge of Glory,' and also played on the track, 'Hair'. This was a musician who remained active to the very end. He will be missed.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga is killing it with her latest album, "Born This Way"! This is only the 17th album to sell over a million copies in the first week, when SoundScan started tracking in 1991. Her album sold 1,108,000 copies in the first week, even with the Amazon fiasco which couldn't handle the traffic and couldn't deliver the promised album for only 99 cents for the first day of release.

There are five singles that have hit the Billboard Top 100, "Born This Way" was released four months ago and hit #1, "The Edge of Glory" is #8 this week, and "Marry the Night" debuted at #79. "You And I" debuted at #36, and "Judas" made it to the Top 100.

Lady Gaga was all over the place for this release, she was on the David Letterman show and The View and did a personal appearance at Best Buy where she signed her CD's for her fans. Her Little Monster fans love her for her message which is "Be yourselves, love who you are, and be proud". When she was asked, "Where do you go from here?"...Lady Gaga answered that she just wanted to keep making music and make her fans happy. She wanted her Little Monsters to remember that "she was fearless". With four singles in the Top 100 and her album #1 of the Top 200, it looks like everyone is cuckoo for GaGa.

American Idol

95 million votes were cast for the American Idol Grand Finale, showing that American Idol's still got it! The show has been declining in viewership since 2007, but this year with a change in judges and younger than ever contestants, American Idol gained viewers for the first time in three years and looks like it going to be a television fixture for years to come. With JLo and Steven Tyler debuting new songs on the show, it made for great tv this season.

Scotty McCreery, a seventeen year old country crooner from North Carolina, won the night. He debuted a new single called "I Love You This Big" on the Finale show. And the Award for Best Original Song goes to......Randy Newman for the song "We Belong Together" from the movie Toy Story 3. Randy wrote the music and lyrics for the award winning song. The songs nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song:

Glee Popularity

The Golden Globes aired on television on Sunday night and Glee won the Golden Globe for Best Television Series-Comedy or Musical. Jane Lynch who plays the nasty Sue, won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini Series or Motion Picture made for television.

In its sophomore season, GLEE is still a pop-culture phenomenon. This season's No. 1 entertainment series among Teens and a Top 3 series among Adults 18-49 and 18-34 boasts critical acclaim, a loyal fan base of "GLEEks," two Platinum and two Gold albums, two Grammy Award nominations, more than 16 million song downloads, the record for the most titles on the Billboard Hot 100 by a non-solo act (beating out The Beatles), the No. 1 soundtrack of 2010 ("The Christmas Album"), an incredible 19 Emmy and 11 Golden Globe nominations - earning it the distinction of being the most-nominated series of the year - and four Emmy Awards. To top it off, the genre-defying, award-winning series has been picked up through its third season.
